Great Barrier Reef, Pudasjärvi

The creation of an open water area, estimated to be over 30 ha in size, will make an already popular area for birds an even better breeding habitat and resting place.

Paikkakunta: Pudasjärvi

Maakunta: Pohjois-Pohjanmaa

Pinta-ala: 30 ha

Isoahontaussuo in Pudasjärvi is a former peat production area owned by OP-Metsänomistajarahisto and several local individuals.

The area will be restored as part of the Finnish Game Management Foundation’s JTF-funded POPKA project, and TeMePa Infra Oy is responsible for the wetland design. The restoration of the site is mainly funded by the ELY Centre of North Ostrobothnia, and the project is coordinated by the Finnish Game Management Foundation using outsourced services.

Remediation will also reduce carbon emissions from the area as the peat mass remains submerged, while the reservoir will also act as an effective protection for the water bodies below against the solid water loads of meltwater and flooding.
