Risusuo, Suomussalmi
The Risusuo wetland site is a long uncultivated wetland-based peat field in Suomussalmi, south of Lake Naamankajärvi’s Suolilahti. Before the area was cleared as a field, it was either bare woodland or boggy birch and moss swamp. Risusuo was restored with funding from BASC, a British hunting organisation.
Paikkakunta: Suomussalmi
Maakunta: Kainuu
Pinta-ala: 9 ha

The wetland was created by damming two levels to form two basins. The reservoir dammed at the northern edge of the field is piped water from a larger reservoir, the dam of which was built across the field in an east-west direction, following the elevation. The reservoir receives water from the west and south-west from a forested catchment area. In total, the wetland has a water surface area of about 9 hectares, with a total impact area of 14.5 hectares.
The restoration work in Risusuo is funded by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. The Finnish Game Centre’s SOTKA-Kosteikot project is responsible for the restoration planning of the area, and the Finnish Game Management Foundation is responsible for tendering the engineering work. The site is one of three sites to be implemented under a BASC Major Grant in 2023. The site was completed in autumn 2024.
