In April 2024, the Finnish Game Foundation applied for JTF funding from the ELY Centre of North Ostrobothnia to restore 5 different peat production areas in North Ostrobothnia and Kainuu, for a total of 75 hectares of open water area.<\/p>\n

ELY North Ostrobothnia granted the funding in June 2024, and the project will start immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restoration takes biodiversity into account and reduces carbon emissions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In former peatland areas to be restored, dams, nesting islands and water will be built to cover the peat mass and create suitable new habitat for waders and waterfowl. In addition to promoting biodiversity and waterfowl habitats, restoration of the sites will improve the condition of downstream water bodies by improving flow control during flood periods and filtering solids through wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The JTF project aims to be completed by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
